The Writing Flywheel — A new cohort-based course for Software Engineering & Product Leaders

3 min readFeb 11, 2024
Writing leads to many domino effects: improved clarity, developing new ideas, and inspiring change.
When we start writing better, it leads to a domino effect. Visual created by me.

Writing is an important skill:

- first, to clarify our own thinking, and then…
- to simplify it for others to take action.

While I see that there are a few different writing courses (I attended one in 2021), I don’t see one specific to helping software engineering & product leaders (both ICs and managers).

Over the last few years, I have been learning and applying a few frameworks. These are the things I really wish I knew ~1–5 years back. These apply to the entire lifecycle: how to identify problems, how to gain insights, how to create clarity for yourself, how to simplify it for your audience, getting feedback etc.

Hence, I posted on LinkedIn a few days back asking this:

If I offered an online cohort-based course with all those learnings, would you be interested?

As part of the above, I posted a survey with only one question:

If this course could help you accomplish ONE thing, what would it be?

Responses to the above post

The above post resonated with many engineering and product leaders. They responded to my survey. I then spoke to a few of the respondents — to learn more about their challenges and aspirations.

The theme that emerged was that they want to get better at clarifying their own thinking, simplifying the message, and then structuring it concisely and effectively to inspire change.

But they don’t want to stop there. They also want to mentor and coach their team to get better at these skills.

So, I am taking the next step: I am excited to launch a cohort-based course to help s/w engineering & product leaders create their writing flywheel!

But, why a cohort-based course, and not a book or a self-paced course?

After attending 4 cohort-based courses myself over the last few years, I have seen first-hand the benefits it brings:

  • rich interactions with the coach AND the peers,
  • hands-on exercises and projects,
  • more accountability,
  • connections with the community,
  • helps retain learnings since you are applying them immediately,
  • and, most importantly, it is fun learning with others!

Hence, going with this model was a no-brainer!

What will we be covering in this course?

The course page has the full details of what we will be covering, schedule, pricing etc.:
